Tim Carson
Welcome to Vocal Artistry.
I’m Tim Carson.
I’ve been coaching singers for over 30 years and my students include recording artists with worldwide tours, singers who have appeared on American Idol, The Voice, and Broadway, as well as brand new beginners and folks who just love to sing!
Singing became my life’s passion and ultimately my career focus beginning at the age of 15. It’s the only thing I’ve pursued vocationally, and the only thing I’ve ever done to make a living. When the singing bug bit, it got me good!
My passion has always been for modern styles like pop, rock, jazz, and even musical theater. These are the styles I have sung the most as a professional, and these are the styles the clients I have worked with perform in as well. Even with my focus on these genres, I began my career studying classical voice, and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Voice from Wheaton College, and a Master’s Degree in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago, IL under the direction of Dr. Ronald Combs, an internationally renowned voice instructor who has taught Grammy and Tony award winners, and pioneered many of the techniques I use in Vocal Artistry. I'm grateful every day that I got to learn from one of the best who's ever walked the planet!
So what is my approach and what do I teach?
Vocal Health – The cornerstone of all I do is grounded on a healthy, sustainable approach to vocal development. I emphasize vocal freedom, and alleviating vocal tension not only to improve the sound and increase vocal flexibility and versatility, but to also find effortless power and strength while protecting against damage and misuse.
My Master’s program was an intensive study on the anatomy and physiological function of the voice. I basically went to “Med School for Vocal Coaches”. I understand the way the voice is structured, and more than just offering techniques and tricks, I help my clients develop a practical, healthy plan to reach their goals based on a solid knowledge of the voice and how it works.
I have many clients who have been referred to me by some of the top Otolaryngologists (voice doctors) in the US for vocal rehabilitation, and have presented the techniques I teach for healthy singing in modern styles at some of the Nation's leading voice and medical conferences, including:
Style – I work in the world of non-classical vocal style. I always have. I work primarily in mainstream pop and rock but also have successful clients in jazz, r&b, gospel, blues and musical theater. I help singers develop the tools to thrive in the current music scene, emphasizing stylistic versatility and flexibility so that the singer is able to be in complete control over their voice to express in whatever way they wish.
While I’ve studied classical music and even performed some professional opera myself, if your goal is the Metropolitan Opera, I’m not your guy.
The Heart – Singing is about a lot more than simply sounding good. As you go about the business of fully expressing your voice to the world, and removing the obstacles and barriers that hold back your truest expression…whatever is holding you back in LIFE is exactly what’s going to come right to the surface in this journey of vocal development. The shifts that happen internally through the process are just as critical (and sometimes even more important!) to unleashing the full potential of the voice than learning vocal technique and mastering style.
I don't believe in a "one-size fits all" method, but instead work with each client as an individual, with a unique background, personality, experience in music, vocal ability level, strengths and weaknesses, and story to tell. And so my approach with each client is as unique as they are.
Feel free to email me directly with any additional questions you have, and thanks for stopping by!
